Shimla: a little context

Shimla grew from a small Himalayan township into the British summer capital in the nineteenth century. The Ridge and Mall remain central to the town’s public life, while Christ Church, Gaiety Theatre and the former Viceregal Lodge preserve different chapters of its colonial-era built history.

The Kalka–Shimla railway was built between 1898 and 1903. Its 102 tunnels and mountain alignment are part of the UNESCO-recognised mountain railway. It offers a rail alternative for part of the journey, while a cab is useful for a direct pickup, luggage and onward transfers around Shimla.

The Ridge

The open space runs alongside Mall Road and brings together views of the Himalayan ranges, Christ Church, the State Library and Gaiety Theatre. It is a useful starting point for a central Shimla walk.

Jakhoo Temple

Set on Jakhoo Hill above the town. Himachal Tourism lists it about 2.5 km from the Ridge by one approach and 6 km by Circular Road; check the route and access that suit your visit.
