PLACE AND PAST
Agra: a little context
The Taj Mahal was commissioned by Shah Jahan in memory of Mumtaz Mahal. Construction began in 1632; the main mausoleum took about eight years, while work on the wider complex continued until 1653. The monument and its garden setting form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Agra Fort tells a different part of the same imperial history. Akbar began its construction in 1565; later Mughal rulers, including Shah Jahan, added marble buildings within its red sandstone walls. Shah Jahan spent the last years of his life confined there, according to the Ministry of Tourism’s account.

MAKE TIME FOR
Places to see around Agra
Each stop below has a different location and visitor context. Open its official source before you travel, then add the places you want to your itinerary.

Taj Mahal
Allow time for security, the garden approach and the mausoleum. The official guide describes the complex as a riverbank garden setting, not just the central marble building.

Agra Fort
A large red sandstone fort with palaces and audience halls added across successive Mughal reigns. Pair it with the Taj only if your available time allows for two separate monument visits.
Mehtab Bagh
A garden on the Yamuna’s opposite bank, known as a viewpoint toward the Taj Mahal. Treat it as a separate stop and confirm current access and opening information.
CHECK BEFORE DEPARTURE
Entry, access and current visitor details
Taj Mahal entry is timed around sunrise and sunset, and its gates do not all serve the same purpose. Check the official visitor and ticket information before departure; do not rely on old ticket prices copied into a route page.
Taj Mahal visitor information ↗YOUR TRIP PLAN
Before you leave for Agra
- Choose the monument you want to visit first and use its official gate or parking information as your map destination.
- If you want both the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, allow time for separate entry checks and road transfers between them.
- Fatehpur Sikri is outside central Agra; add it as a separate stop rather than assuming it is part of a city drop.
